The evolution of the dentition is about so much more than teeth

Welcome to the website for Professor Leslea Hlusko’s research group at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana, CENIEH, in Burgos (Spain).

We are interested in the genetic basis of mammalian variation and its evolution, with an eye towards better understanding the human condition. Our biological research is interdisciplinary, combining paleontology, neontology, quantitative genetics, developmental genetics, and proteomics in an effort to approach morphological evolution from a genotypic perspective.

Our main research emphasis right now is the Tied2Teeth project funded by an ERC Advanced Grant. This 5-year project explores the pleiotropic effects between the dentition and non-dental traits.

While most of our research is biological, we strive to always be mindful of the societal and historical context in which it is done, the humanity of the people doing the research, and the humanitarian implications of the results and conclusions. We stand in agreement with the American Association of Biological Anthropologists’ statement on race and racism.
